Spencerport's new elementary school named
The Spencerport Board of Education has selected Canal View Elementary School as the name for the new school currently under construction. Board members made the choice based on a recommendation made by a board-appointed committee of community members. The committee considered many options, including the names of prominent local citizens, and made its recommendation based on the area's geographic and historic legacy.
The new elementary school, a major piece of the district's building project, is scheduled to open in the fall with students transferred from the district's three existing elementary schools. A Task Force on Elementary School Attendance Boundaries, co-chaired by Dan Milgate, principal of Canal View Elementary School, is facilitating the development of recommendations on attendance boundaries.
The task force consists of two parents from each of the existing elementary schools; one teacher and the principal from each elementary school; and three at-large community members. Transportation Director Michael Proukou, Pat Chapman from the census and attendance office, and a representative from an independent transportation consultant will serve as advisory members.
