Sweden/Clarkson project honored by state

The towns of Sweden and Clarkson have been recognized as finalists in the inaugural NYS Governor's Quality Communities Awards for Excellence. The Quality Communities Initiative demonstrates New York state's commitment to working with local leaders to find smart, innovative solutions to strengthen the economy, improve the quality of the natural environment and enhance the livability of the local community, according to town representatives.

Sweden and Clarkson were declared finalists for their commitment to providing a community center and full-time recreation program for their residents. Until this year, Sweden, Clarkson and the Village of Brockport had operated a part-time recreation program, that at times, had trouble finding suitable space for programs it wished to offer.

The Community Center, located at 4927 Lake Road, includes 30,000 square feet of space for a variety of programs. The towns have also committed funds for a full-time staff, and residents can use the facility seven days a week.

Supervisors Nat O. Lester III and Paul Kimball were recognized for providing the leadership to undertake the community center, and also for working to strengthen intergovernmental partnerships.

The nine finalists were featured at the Quality Communities 2002 Conference held in Albany, October 22-23.
