Pack 292 Cub Scouts design and launch rockets

Cub Scouts looked to the skies of October in an attempt to launch rockets into the upper atmosphere. Cub Scout Pack 292, chartered by the Chili Lions, held a bottle rocket launch at the Fairbanks Road Elementary School on the Churchville-Chili campus.

After one weather delay, the official countdown began for over 50 scouts and 100 on-lookers who joined in the launch pad activities. Rockets were generally constructed of two liter plastic bottles and were powered by compressed air. Water was used to govern and control thrust during the ascent. Some design features included long, weighted noses for stability; additional booster rockets on the sides; and even parachutes. Some rockets achieved heights of over 100 feet. All returned to Earth, but not necessarily in the same shape.

The activity was part of Pack 292's 2002-2003 scout program for area youths.
