Hill Elementary School discovers Biome Regions of the World
Wildlife educator Tom Hudak is presenting a week-long program entitled Biome Regions of the World to all Hill Elementary School students during the week of November 18 through November 25.
Biomes are the world's major communities, classified according to the predominant vegetation and characterized by adaptations of organisms to that environment.
Hill School students are learning about the characteristics of each biome, and applying that knowledge to the specialized adaptations plants and animals make to live in each region. They are learning that each region is unique and needs to be preserved and they need to be good citizens as members of a global society.
"Rather than simply presenting a lot of facts, we are encouraging students to use their critical thinking skills," said Hudak.
The program is part of Project ADEPT (Diversified Enrichment Programs for the Talented) at Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES. Project ADEPT is a multi-component enrichment program for gifted and talented students with special interests.
Hudak has taught at SUNY Geneseo and Monroe Community College. His work as a wildlife educator has taken him to the rainforests of New Guinea and Vietnam, the Alaska tundra and the southwest desert of the United States. He will appear on the David Letterman Show on November 26 with Jack Hanna, and on the Maury Povich Show on December 24.
