At Holley Elementary School, the soup on the menu is much more than an entrée. Students recently brought in cans of broth and vegetables, half of which were used to make soup that was enjoyed by the whole school. The other half will be donated to the Orleans Community Center as Holley Elementary School's "hope for the community."
The event began last year as part of Red Ribbon Week. Classes read the "Red Ribbon Story of Hope" in which people work together sharing what they have with each other and building a community of hope. Students then built their own community of hope by sharing the food they collected - well over 100 cans in all. This year, in addition to another 100 cans of food, the school's student council is also collecting canned goods, which they will add to the donation.
The event supports the school's Character Education Program, which is based on six pillars of good character - responsibility, caring, trustworthiness, respect, fairness and citizenship.
