Holiday basketball tournaments are cancer fundraisers
Boys play in Coaches vs Cancer
Spencerport Central Schools will be hosting the 5th annual Coaches vs Cancer Boys Basketball Tournament on December 27 and 28 at Nazareth College.
This year's tournament features local Palmyra Macedon and defending champions Fairport, along with host Spencerport and perennially strong power Lockport from Section VI.
Games on Friday, December 27 feature Palmyra Macedon vs Spencerport at 5:15 p.m. followed by Lockport vs Fairport at 7 p.m. Saturday, December 28, consolation game is at 5:15 p.m. and the championship game is at 7 p.m.
All proceeds from this tournament are directed to the American Cancer Society in the name of Coaches vs Cancer. Coaches vs Cancer is affiliated with the National Association of Basketball Coaches and was formed to honor the late Jim Valvano, basketball coach and ESPN personality who died of cancer.
Sponsors are Nazareth College ,Wendy's Restaurants of Rochester, Spencerport Central School District and The American Cancer Society.
A donation of $11,000 was given to the American Cancer Society from last year's tournament, making a four-year total of $27,000.
Girls play Coach Chow Holiday Classic
Spencerport Central Schools, Roberts Wesleyan College, Wendy's Restaurants of Rochester and the American Cancer Society will be hosting the 12th Annual "Coach Chow" Holiday Classic Girls Basketball Tournament on December 27 and 28 at Roberts Wesleyan College.
This year's tournament features Churchville-Chili, Gates-Chili, Brockport and host, Spencerport.
Games on Friday, December 27 feature Churchville-Chili vs. Spencerport at 5:15 p.m., followed by Brockport vs. Gates Chili at 7 p.m. On Saturday, December 28, the consolation game is at 5:15 p.m. and the championship game is at 7 p.m.
The tournament is named for the very popular long-time Spencerport Girls Varsity Basketball coach, Don "Coach Chow" Wierzchowski who died last year from pancreatic cancer. Proceeds of the tournament will be donated to the American Cancer Society in "Coach Chow's" name.
