Twenty Oliver Middle School students showed their holiday spirit of giving as they shopped for the Brockport Toy Shelf at the Brockport Wal-Mart store on Monday, December 8.

The Oliver School Student Council held a school dance in November to raise funds for this shopping adventure. Over $1,100 was collected at this dance. The students, all student council representatives, used this money to purchase gifts for the Brockport Toy Shelf.

As students entered the Wal-Mart store, they were given directions by Student Council advisor, Amy Gaesser. She instructed the students to look for gifts for children age thirteen through seventeen. "The Toy Shelf always runs out of gifts for teenage kids, so look for things you would like," instructed Gaesser. The students broke into groups of two and three, traveling around the store filling their carts with gifts. Drew Brannan and Joe Cilento asked the advice of Electronics manager Tim Czapecka as they decided to purchase a Playstation One system and game. "This was a good thing to do because it helps the less fortunate and gives them something they would not have," said Brannan. Cilento commented, "It was fund because we got to buy things we like." Footballs, basketballs, a giant stuffed snowman, books, makeup kits and clothing are some of the gift items the students purchased.

At the checkout line, Oreste Madrid broke into a big smile as he helped his group load gifts onto the checkout counter. "It's great to give back to people instead of always receiving. They'll have a big smile on their face when they open these gifts."
