Students experience engineering
Twenty high school students from six districts participated in a BOCES 2 Project ADEPT (A Diversified Enrichment Program for Talented) seminar on Packaging Engineering held at RIT. The students learned how math skills and science knowledge are applied in creative ways to solve real problems in the field of packaging. As a product moves through the manufacturing process from design to delivery, it could be argued that the time of greater risk occurs during the transportation and delivery phase.
Presenter of the seminar was Dr. Dan Goodwin of RIT's Center for Integrated Manufacturing Studies. The students gained an understanding of the work of a packaging engineer through demonstrations of a shock test, a vibration table and through problem solving discussions. Both the shock test and vibration table are used by packaging engineers to test products for companies seeking the best mode of transportation for their products.
