Village officials pleased with resolution of 3M issue
Nearly two years after taking a very proactive stance on the clean-up of contaminants in the Village of Brockport, village officials are pleased to learn of the resolution of a law suit between 3M Corporation and attorneys representing affected village residents. It is seen as another important step toward bringing the issue to a close.
The clean up of the residential areas within the village has been completed. "The board of trustees and I are very proud of the team we put together to meet this challenge," said Village of Brockport Mayor Josephine Matela. "It just goes to show you what a dedicated group of professionals can do when the spirit of cooperation prevails throughout the process," she said.
According to 3M representative Bill Nelson, "3M is very appreciative of the leadership by Mayor Matela and her administration. Her dedication and commitment to the best interest of Brockport was evident throughout the project."
Environmental Consultant Ken Pike, of Earthworks Environmental, retained by the village at the request of affected residents, said "Throughout the cleanup process, representatives from NYSDEC and contractors for 3M and GE repeatedly characterized the environmental restoration in Brockport as more thorough than any other they've experienced. Established cleanup standards were even more stringent for Brockport in order to ensure unrestricted use of the residents' properties.
This elevated level of scrutiny documents and verifies that no residues from 3M or GE's discharges remain for residents present and future to be concerned about, regardless of use. "It's time now to look to the future and focus on new endeavors that will benefit the Brockport community," said Matela.
