SUNY Maritime application deadline extended
According to Assembly Republican Leader Charles H. Nesbitt (R,C-Albion), applications for the new Cadet Appointment Program at SUNY Maritime will now be accepted until February 1. The program enables the governor, state senators and members of the assembly to nominate eligible students to attend Maritime College as part of its Regiment of Cadets.
According to Nesbitt, beginning with the 2003-04 academic year, a highly qualified student from the district may be eligible to receive a four-year scholarship, providing the student remains in good academic standing in the regimental program.
SUNY Maritime, founded in 1874 in Forty Schuyler in the Bronx, offers both bachelors' and masters' degrees in such fields as marine engineering, mathematics, marine transportation, computer science, oceanography and other related areas. The college, whose primary goal is to prepare young men and women to become licensed officers in the American Merchant Marine, consistently rates 100 percent job placement among its graduates.
Students seeking a nomination from Assemblyman Nesbitt must meet the following criteria. have a high school GPA of 90 percent or higher; have a combined SAT score of 1200; have demonstrated leadership and community service; meet the college's minimum requirement as well as participate in the Regiments of Cadets Program; be a resident of the district and have lived in New York state for at least one year prior to nomination; and be a first-time freshman.
