Gates Lions distribute Liberty Day booklets
Lions Clubs International created a special project called Liberty Day a number of years ago. Liberty Day began as a way to teach students about the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution and in the fall of 2000, both houses of the U.S. Congress recognized Liberty Day in a Resolution -- making it a national, annual celebration.
In spring 2002, the Executive Committee of the National Education Association endorsed Liberty Day and 48 states now celebrate Liberty Day in their schools, thanks to many local Lions Clubs.
The Gates Lions have donated 1,400 Liberty Day booklets to schools in Gates to be used by teachers and students. These booklets have within them the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. Lions Clubs International and the Gates Lions feel it is important for youth to know and understand the foundation on which the nation is built.
Liberty Day is officially celebrated on March 16 which is the birthday of James Madison, 'Father of the Constitution.'
These booklets are available to all school teachers, boy and girl scout troops and any other service organization wishing to celebrate the country's inception. Contact Lion Edie Pereira Hulbert at 529-5204 for information.
