Students compete in Science Olympiad
More than 300 area high school students competed in the 2003 Regional High School Science Olympiad at SUNY Brockport on Saturday, February 8. The students demonstrated their knowledge of cell biology, chemical reactions, earth processes, fossils, genetics, human disease and nutrition, mapping, ornithology, polymers, simple machines, and the experimental method. Students applied their technological know-how in designing, building, and testing balsa wood boomilevers, electronically operated robots, home-made musical instruments, airplanes, catapults, and energy transfer devices.
Students from Webster Schroeder, Fairport, Greece Arcadia, and Brighton were top finishers qualifying for the State High School Science Olympiad to be held at West Point Academy in March. Red Creek was the alternate team that will be invited to the state competition if one of the qualifying teams can not attend. The spirit trophy went to the students from Byron-Bergen for best sportsmanship.
