B-B's Sherwood Coach of the Year
Byron-Bergen's girl's basketball coach, Tom Sherwood, was named Class CCC Coach of the Year at the Sectional Luncheon held February 13 at the Four Points Sheraton in Rochester. It is the second consecutive year he has won the award.
"The girl's have played hard since we took a stumble last year in the second round of the sectional playoffs," said Sherwood. "They were committed to come back strong, worked hard in the off season and we've been together since that time. This is a tribute to their efforts and I'm just along for the ride."
The Lady Bees finished tied for the top seed in Class CCC with Wellsville, but lost the first coin toss for seeding in the 31-year history of the tournament. As the second seed, they faced tenth-seeded Avon in the second round after finishing the season 18-2.
The Bees only sectional title was at the Class CC level in 1983 and this year won the Genesee Region title. The players participate year round at the AAU level with the Genesee Valley Phillies along with 40 other players from the school, which helps keep the Bees competitive year after year. "We attribute part of it to that, but we also had our junior varsity program go 15-5 this year. Basically the students have bought into the system and have worked hard to make it successful. The bracket couldn't be better because Letchworth falls in our bracket and they knocked us out last year. We're looking forward to playing them again in a rematch. The proof in the pudding, as I like to say, will be coming home with a Class CCC crown."
