Ranger netters make it to semi's
"We started rough with three losses, but the girls turned it around to win three of the next four matches," said head coach Mike Zeman in describing the Spencerport Rangers Girls Volleyball season. "I was impressed how they handled the early part of the season as a team."
The Rangers finished with an 8-11 record, but was 32-39 in games within the matches meaning several extended to four or five games. In the five matches that went the distance, the Rangers were 3-2. After defeating Batavia on the road in the quarterfinals in four games, their season was ended by Greece Arcadia in the semi-finals. Arcadia finished the playoffs without a single game loss to any team.
Senior Chrissy Jackson was named the team's Most Valuable Player and finished the season with the highest hitting percentage on the team. Senior Meredeth Muller was named the Most Improved Player and "brought to the team a level of composure." Melissa Parkhurst was named the team's Scholar Athlete and Jess Bartock was named to the Monroe County All-Tournament Team.
Outside hitter Melissa Watson was named to the All-County first team while Jackson, Laura Stultz and Kelly Schweikert were named to the second team. Schweikert led the team in kills.
Senior Jessica Clontz was named Honorable Mention for All-County team and "stepped up as a leader and finished with one of the higher hitting percentages. Junior Stultz was learning the setter job as the season wore on. Her job was to direct the other five players on the court, distributing the ball and learning how to deceive the block and the other team's defense," said Zeman. "Our other setter, Caitlin O'Brien, also was learning the job this year while filling in and led us to several victories."
Zeman concluded, "This was a developmental year for us even though we had seven seniors," said Zeman. "We were young in terms of experience and the girls were developing their volleyball skills all season. We made a nice push to make it to the semi's."
