Holley High ties in tribute to war veterans
with 'South Pacific' performance
Holley Jr./Sr. High School is presenting "South Pacific" Thursday, March 13 through Sunday, March 16. The Rodgers and Hammerstein musical is set on an island in the Pacific during WWII. The Holley production features the talents of junior and senior high school students cast in over 100 parts.
"During the musical, there will be an impressive display in the school's main hallway to pay tribute to those who are serving or have served in the armed services. 'South Pacific' takes place during World War II, so we thought it set the tone for such a tribute," said teacher Kellie Burke. She put out a call to the Holley Teachers' Association to bring in photos of family members who have served. Students were also welcome to bring in photos. Holley Historian Marcia DeFilipps has loaned the school a number of artifacts for the display as well. Putting it all together is art teacher Tony Barry, who is a veteran himself.
The Village of Holley has the unfortunate distinction of having the most casualties per capita in the United States from the Vietnam War. Burke said that while the school couldn't physically display the photos of all that served, the tribute is still meant to honor them.
Holley's performances of "South Pacific" will be Thursday through Saturday, March 13-15 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 16 at 2 p.m. in the Holley High School auditorium. Tickets are on sale in the High School main office. The performers are also taking orders. Tickets are $6 in advance and $7 at the door. Seniors (age 60 and over) residing in the Holley School District may obtain a Gold Card at the main office, which entitles them to free admission to the musical. The card may also be used for sporting events. For information, call the main office at 638-6335.
