"Celebration of Seniors"
raises funds for local meal programs
Monroe County Office for the Aging (MCOFA) hosts the 6th Annual Miles for Meals Walkathon, a "Celebration of Seniors," on Saturday, June 14, in Highland Park, starting at 8:30 a.m. Volunteers from Meals on Wheels and the county's congregate meal programs at area senior centers make this annual event benefiting the two programs possible. The Miles for Meals Walkathon is the only fundraising event held on behalf of Meals on Wheels and the congregate meal program.
This year, the walkathon committee has decided to expand the event into a "Celebration of Seniors." The community is invited to join the seniors and their families in the walkathon, or just to stop by to enjoy the free entertainment and visit various sponsors and vendors in the Exhibition Tent.
Some of the senior centers will be among the exhibitors, with crafts and other items for sale. Admission to the event is free; participation in the walkathon requires a minimum donation of $5. Each walker who raises $50 or more in pledges will receive a free t-shirt.
Live musical entertainment is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The exhibition tent will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. A free continental breakfast, courtesy of Wegmans, will be held for registered walkers from 9 to 11 a.m.
Opening ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. immediately followed by the walk through Highland Park. (Participants may select a 1-1/2 mile walk on rather hilly terrain, or a 1/2 mile walk on a less hilly course). Door prizes, souvenirs, clowns, and other fun activities will be on hand throughout the event.
Organizers are still seeking exhibitors, vendors, sponsors, and volunteers. For information, call the Office for the Aging at 428-4969. Registration brochures for walkers will be available in April; call to be placed on the mailing list.
