Job hunting workshops at
Genesee's Career and Transfer Center
The Genesee Community College Career and Transfer Center is holding a series of free public workshops to help individuals develop their career plans and job search skills. These workshops are ideal for anyone currently searching for their first job, a new position, or thinking about embarking on a job search or career change. All workshops will be held at Genesee's Batavia Campus, and are free and open to the public. Reservations are required, and can be made by contacting Genesee's Career and Transfer Center at 345-6888, or shmarschke@genesee.edu.
"Disability and the Job Search: The Right Job is Accessible" will be held on Tuesday, March 25, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. The Director of the Genesee Region Independent Living Center will speak about when a person should disclose a disability to an employer, how to arrange accommodations with an employer, what constitutes reasonable accommodations, and agencies available to assist with job search concerns. Attendees are invited to bring a bag lunch; dessert and beverage will be provided.
"The Secrets to a Successful Job Search" workshop is scheduled for April 1, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. A representative from Paychex, Inc. will help participants to understand the job search from the employer's point of view. Discussion will include the characteristics employers look for in potential employees, resume writing, and interviewing techniques.
"Backpack to Briefcase: How to Make A Job Fair Work for You" will be held on Tuesday, April 8, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. A panel of local employers from Genesee County Arc, the INS Buffalo Federal Detention Facility, Six Flags Darien Lake, and Washington Mutual will discuss the do's and don'ts of job fairs, including why they attend job fairs, what they expect to accomplish, and what you as the job seeker should expect.
"Blue Jeans to Blue Suit: Dress for Success" will be held on Tuesday, April 15, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Genesee Business Professor Rick Dudkowski will discuss the importance of dressing for success for the job interview and on the job.
"Transfer 101" will be held on Tuesday, April 22, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. A panel of admission representatives from area four-year colleges will discuss the transfer process: what to expect and how to prepare for a trouble-free enrollment.
"Resume Writing & Cover Letter Workshop" will be offered on two separate dates: Tuesday, April 1, from 5 to 6 p.m., and again on Thursday, April 10 from 1 to 2 p.m. This workshop will cover topics pertaining to creating and writing a resume and cover letter, including what information should or should not be included, the types of resumes and cover letters, and how to develop a resume that is ready for scanning.
"Credential File & Interviewing Skills Workshop" will be offered on two separate dates: Thursday, April 3, from 1 to 2 p.m. and again on Tuesday, April 8, from 5 to 6 p.m. Topics to be discussed include how to prepare for an interview, how to dress for an interview, questions to expect at an interview, questions you should ask the employer, and the types of employment interviews. Participants will also learn how to establish a reference file, and the types of references employers prefer.
