CC music department presents first jazz concert
The Churchville-Chili music department will present an evening of jazz Thursday, March 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Churchville-Chili Junior High Commons. This concert will be the first all-jazz program in what is hoped to be an annual event. It will feature the Intermediate School Jazz Band, the "Unnamed" 7-12 Jazz Band, and the High School Swinging Saints. Concert attendees will also have the chance to name the "Unnamed" Jazz Band.
A goal of the music department has been to provide greater opportunity for C-C students to perform jazz music. Until recently, only students at the high school had the chance to play in the district's jazz ensemble, The Swinging Saints. Last year, teacher Christie Ricker volunteered her after-school time to start the Intermediate School Jazz Band. This year, teacher Terry Bacon volunteered to start the "Unnamed" Jazz Band with students in grades 7 through 12.
Prior to the concert, the students will participate in a jazz improvisation workshop with John Viavattine, a local saxophonist and clinician. The workshop will begin at 6 p.m. and is open to the public. The Churchville-Chili Junior High School is located at 137 Fairbanks Road.
