Quilting Bee
Dorothy Tidwell, an avid quilter and recipient of last year's Monroe County Volunteer of the Year Award, visited Holley second-grade classes to talk with students about how she chooses the colors and patterns for her quilts and then puts them together. The 81-year old also brought many of her quilts to show students and shared some squares with them. The students then made their own "friendship quilts" using a wide variety of math skills, including sorting, geometric problem solving, patterning, fractions, ratios, and estimation as well as color and fabric design. The project bridged the classes' unit on geometry with the next unit on fractions. Above, Mrs. Tidwell works with the students in Denise Bedard's class.
