BOCES 2 student places first

BOCES 2 Career and Technical Education Center student Matt Elkins recently presented his speech "My Success at WE-MO-CO" to fellow VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) students, teachers and WAC (Work Activities Center) students at WE-MO-CO. The speech was about his educational experiences at BOCES 2 and his recent win at the New York State Skills/USA VICA competition.

Elkins, a senior, won first place for his presentation, "How to Operate as a Store Cashier" in the competition held in Alfred on March 6. "I've learned confidence and leadership," he said of the competition. "If you have dreams never let them go, you might just surprise yourself," he told fellow students and teachers in his speech.

In his winning presentation, which Elkins recreated for his audience, he discussed bookstore opening and closing procedures, handling money and customer service. He runs the school book store at the WE-MO-CO Career and Technical Education Center and is also the school reporter/photographer for VICA. VICA is an international organization that promotes leadership and professional development for students.

Elkins will continue his education next year by attending the BOCES 2 transitional class for students with disabilities held at Roberts Wesleyan College in North Chili. He loves computers and photography and hopes to pursue a career with Wegmans Food Markets.
