Ogden Historical Society marks
40 years of preserving town's heritage
The Ogden Historical Society's Pulver House Museum on Colby Street in Ogden sits on the north side of Colby Street, just west of Washington Street in the northwest sector of Ogden. The house is said to have been built in 1811 by the Colby family. According to the brochure for the Ogden Historical Society, "It is known by the tax rolls that Eastman Colby built a house on his land in 1811 as his taxes rose from $5.11 to $9.00 in one year. The construction of the house is typically colonial and patterned after the New England homes of the time."
Since the County of Monroe took over the house in 1965, the historical society has created an extensive collection of artifacts, photos and memorabilia that now make up the Pulver House Museum. It is called the "Pulver House" because the Pulver family was the last to make their home at the house before it became the museum in 1967. In an interesting agreement, the county is responsible for the outside of the building and the Ogden Historical Society is responsible for the inside of the structure.
In recent years, the Ogden Historical Society has experienced a reduction in membership. The members are hoping that the celebration of their 40th anniversary will attract new members. Membership is $10 per year for a family and $6 for an individual.
Community support, whether financial or the volunteering of time and talents, is necessary to ensure that the house will be open to the public on a regular basis. Examples of volunteer positions include preparation of materials for display, upkeep of the house, acting as a tour guide or docent, being a host or hostess on Sunday afternoons, being available for visits by special groups and helping to organize and raise funds for special projects.
