Churchville DPW to collect leaves

Get your leaves out to the curb, because the Village of Churchville Department of Public Works is going to make one final sweep through village streets May 5 to pick up the leftovers from last fall's harvest.

The decision came after a lengthy discussion at Monday night's village board meeting, when DPW Superintendent David Adams told board members that the leaves are piling up at the curb. "They were coming out like crazy this weekend," he said.

Leaves are normally collected in the fall by village crews, who make the rounds several times with a vacuum machine, sucking them up from the curbside. Adams explained his crews cannot bring the machine out again, because the leaves coming to the curb now are mixed with other yard debris, including sticks, which clog it up.

In the spring, village residents are required to place all yard debris in biodegradable paper bags placed at the curb for pick-up every other Monday.

Board members urged Adams to make an allowance because of the extreme amount of snow the village received last fall. "With the winter we had, they didn't get them out," said Trustee Scott Cullen, referring to the abnormal number of leaves homeowners had leftover to rake this spring.

"The people have a problem," Adams said. "They didn't get rid of their leaves in the fall. I've got no problem going out once more to pick them up. The one thing I don't want to do is to set a precedent."

Village crews will come around beginning Monday, May 5, raking the leaves to the curb and shoveling them into a loader. Adams reminded board members he cannot do anything with leaves or other lawn debris in plastic bags, because they will not break down in the compost pile.

In other business, the board passed a resolution setting summer hours for the village office from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., from Memorial Day until Labor Day.
