Volunteers assist in towpath upkeep
The Town of Sweden Adopt-A-Trail committee will launch the 2003 season with a town-wide "sweep" of the Erie Canal towpath on Saturday, May 3. Members of the participating organizations will meet at 9 a.m. at Harvester Park on Market Street in Brockport.
Eight local organizations have each taken responsibility for helping the NYS Canal Corporation to maintain "the appearance and condition of a segment of the Canalway." They are the First Presbyterian Church, the Middle School Retirees, the Walks and Talks, the Coffee Cup Campers, the Brockport High School girls swim team, the Brockport Federal Credit Union, the Brockport Garden Club, and the Brockport History Club. Bill Andrews is coordinator for the Town of Sweden.
Volunteers from the participating organizations are expected to walk the towpath at least once a month from April through November, picking up litter, trimming branches, and performing other light maintenance tasks. They are also asked to report more serious problems to the local coordinator, who passes the information along to the Canal Corporation.
