Parrino RBI leads Blue Devils in extra frame

Trailing 4-1 in the seventh inning, the Brockport Blue Devils scored three runs to send the game into extra innings and two more in the eighth in a come-from-behind, 6-5 win over Greece Athena in high school boy's baseball.

Athena built their lead by scoring two runs in the first and fifth innings. Brockport scored a run in the second on a walk to Colby Jones, an error, sacrifice and a RBI groundout by Casey Balog. Athena starting pitcher Ryan Kerr held the Blue Devils to just three hits over the first five innings before the offensive outburst in the seventh against the bullpen.

Balog led off the bottom of the seventh by hustling out an infield single and Andy Parrino singled to right putting runners at first and third. First-team All-State pick and University of Connecticut bound Phil St. Amant followed with a bloop single to right driving in Balog, making the score 4-2. Things didn't look promising after Athena turned a double play, but Colby Jones stroked a triple to center scoring Parrino and Scott Snyder followed with a clutch two-out single to right to tie the game at four.

After Athena scored an unearned run in the top of the eighth to take a 5-4 lead, Brockport's Chris Masiello led off the bottom of the inning with a long home run to right to again tie the game. Then Jay Thomas walked and was sacrificed to second by Balog before Parrino singled up the middle, scoring Thomas with the winning run.

"These are the types of victories you expect from a veteran team," said Brockport Head Coach Brian Jones. "Mark Lawrenz came in and pitched very well for the last two innings to get his first varsity win."

Lawrenz allowed no hits and an unearned run in relief of starter Masiello who scattered five hits over six innings. The Blue Devils raised their record to 4-2, 1-0 with the win.
