A Bike-a-Thon sponsored by the Knights of Columbus to benefit local charities and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is set for Saturday, May 17 at Hamlin Beach State Park, Area 3. Registration begins at 8 a.m., Bike-A-Thon start time is 8:30 a.m.

The two Grand Prizes have been donated by Burke's Hardware, Hamlin: a men's and women's mountain bike, awarded to the male and female who turn in the largest donations. A cassette boom box will be awarded to the runner up who has turned in the second largest donation.

This year, the male and female Mileage Challenge winners will each receive a $25 Wal-Mart money card. In addition, a contest for past participants and current and past volunteers will be recognized with the Mentor Program contest award. The past participant and the volunteer who mentors the most participants this year will each receive a prize of $50.

In addition to these prizes, each participants bringing in $35 or more in donations will receive a St. Jude Children's Research Hospital T-shirt. Those participants bringing in $75 or more in donations will receive either a St. Jude T-Shirt and duffel bag or a St. Jude Sweatshirt. Food and drink will be provided. Everyone is invited to participate: bikers, trikers, roller bladers, walkers, waders (it is at the beach), and watchers. Safety gear required. For information, call 494-1061.
