Soapbox derby events planned
Clarendon's 4th annual Soapbox Car Race will be held on Saturday, June 7. The goals of the event are positive youth development and family and community involvement. The family builds the car together and then spends the race day together, either working as the pit crew for the racer, or as spectators cheering from the sidelines. Each racer has procured a sponsor to help with the cost of the Derby-go Kit and registration fees. Local businesses are car sponsors or event/product sponsors. Sponsors names are displayed on the cars, as well as on sponsor signs throughout the event.
Although many of the seventy-one racers this year are from the Clarendon/Holley area, there are numerous racers from Brockport, Spencerport, Churchville, Albion and other areas as well. The race is open to anyone who wants to participate. There are four youth divisions; Division I - ages 8-10, Division II - ages 11-16, Division III - Heavyweight (ages 8-16 not eligible for Division I or II) and Division III - Handicapped (ages 8-16 physically impaired). This is the second year with an adult division (over 16 years). Friday, prior to the race, racers dressed in their race gear will bring their cars to the official weigh-in where the cars will be checked in and impounded. Photos of the racers, their cars and sponsor signs will be taken and will be on display at the race. Race day will involve trial runs for each car and a double elimination race - Race to Win and Race to Place.
Food and refreshments available at the race are provided by local scout and school groups.
Trial runs are at 9 a.m. The race begins at 11 a.m. Follow the signs to the race hill on South Manning Road (off Rt. 31A between Rt. 237 and Rt. 98). The pit area will be near Mansfield Road and the finish line near Brown Schoolhouse Road. For information call the Clarendon Town Clerk, 638-6371 ext. 100.
