Meghan Sugar of Holley graduated and received a bachelor of arts degree in ceremonies May 10 at State University of New York at Buffalo. Sugar graduated Phi Beta Kappa and with high distinction from the Department of Communicative Disorders and Sciences where she majored in speech pathology. Phi Beta Kappa is a national honor society that recognizes superior academic achievement in undergraduate work in the liberal arts and sciences.


Heather L. Berry, daughter of Marc and Nancy Berry of Spencerport, recently graduated from Allegheny College. A graduate of Spencerport High School, Berry received a bachelor of science degree in neuroscience and psychology.

Berry participated in swimming and America Reads and earned honors as an Alden Scholar her junior and senior years, achieving a grade point average of 3.2 or higher.


Nicole Dean of Brockport, a senior majoring in biology in The College of Arts and Sciences at Syracuse University, received an Award Certificate for Academic Excellence from the Biology Department at the college's annual awards convocation held May 10. Award Certificates for Academic Excellence are presented annually to senior biology or biochemistry majors with a grade point average of 3.6 or higher.


Briani Ramsahai of Rochester, a senior majoring in biology in the College of Arts and Sciences at Syracuse University, received an Award Certificate for Academic Achievement from the Biology Department at the college's annual awards convocation held May 10. Award Certificates for Academic Achievement are presented annually by the Biology Department's Undergraduate Awards Committee and are based on faculty recommendations and an evaluation of a student's academic and research credentials and abilities.


The following students at Syracuse University were among the academic degree candidates honored at the university's 149th commencement ceremony held May 11 in the university's Carrier Dome. The ceremony was presided over by Chancellor Kenneth A. Shaw.

S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications graduates are:

Shawn Anderson, Deerborne Lane, Spencerport. Anderson received a bachelor of science degree in newspaper journalism. oJessica Martin, Redman Road, Brockport. Martin received a bachelor of science degree in television-radio-film.

Beth Laskoski, Belvedere Drive, Rochester. Laskoski received a bachelor of science degree in advertising.

Michelle Ley, Stony Point Road, Rochester. Ley received a bachelor of science degree in public relations.

The College of Arts and Sciences graduates are:

Sara Brugnoni, Ashwood Circle, Rochester. Brugnoni received a bachelor's degree in inclusive elementary and special education.

Natalie Jones, Forest Meadow Trail, Rochester. Jones received a bachelor's degree in music education.

The School of Management graduates are:

Norman Carlson, Renouf Drive, Rochester. Carlson received a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing management.

Beth Laskoski, Belvedere Drive, Rochester. Laskoski received a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing management.


Stephanie Forsey, daughter of Richard and Colleen Forsey of Ogden, and a graduate of Churchville-Chili, was named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Alfred University. She was awarded the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Outstanding Student Award at the annual Honors Convocation in April. This award is given annually to an undergraduate student in the Mechanical Engineering Program in recognition of scholarship, professional activities, and community service.


Jill M. Burghardt, daughter of Jon and Ann Burghardt of Lake Road, Brockport, received a bachelor's degree in mathematics during the 111th commencement exercises held at Gordon College Saturday, May 17.

Burghardt is a 1999 graduate of Brockport High School. While at Gordon she was the co-captain of the women's varsity soccer team for two seasons and was a recipient of the Sarah Ball Award, given annually to the math, science or computer science major who has earned the highest cumulative grade-point average during the previous academic year. She also received the female Scholar-Athlete Award, which is given to the female athlete who best brings together academic excellence and athletic achievement.


Monroe County Fire Auxiliary has installed two members from the Walker Fire Department Auxiliary as officers for the coming year. Bonnie Hartman will be the new vice-president and Janet Haight won another term as treasurer. The county meeting scheduled in June was set for the Hamlin Exempts Club and featured a potluck dinner. Members of this county-wide organization are from the twenty volunteer fire companies of Monroe County.


Barbara K. Hodder, daughter David and Kate Hodder of Spencerport, graduated from Clarkson University on Sunday, May 11 with a bachelor's degree in technical communications. She also graduated from SUNY Potsdam Sunday, May 18 with a bachelor's degree in music business.


Judy Mendoza, Orchard Street, North Chili, received a master of science degree in speech communication from the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University.


Jon Kruger of Hilton participated in Valparaiso University's fourth annual Celebration of Undergraduate Scholarship April 23.

Kruger's project is entitled "Geotechnical Aspects of Building a Golf Course on a Landfill." Using Deercroft landfill as their model, Kruger and his team do soil profiles where building is being done, help with landfill cover, find the number of piles and the pile capacity, and calculate the amount of earthwork that needs to be done.

Kruger, a senior at VU, is majoring in civil engineering in the College of Engineering. He is a graduate of Hilton Central High School and is the son of Richard and Donna Kruger of Hilton.

The annual Celebration of Undergraduate Scholarship showcases creative and scholarly student work in a professional format that provides an overview of the student projects.


Jeffrey Hanson of Hilton was named to the dean's list for the spring 2003 semester at Alfred State College.

Students from the Alfred campus are selected for the dean's list if they maintain a 3.25 grade point average (GPA) out of a possible 4.0; students from the School of Applied (formerly Vocational) Technology Campus in Wellsville must maintain a 3.50 grade point average (GPA) to make the dean's list.


Ryan D. Rinaldo received a bachelor of science degree with distinction in chemical engineering in commencement ceremonies May 11 at Clarkson University. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Rinaldo, Alana Drive, Rochester.


Shaina K. Bellis received a bachelor of science degree with great distinction in mechanical engineering in commencement ceremonies May 11 at Clarkson University.

She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bellis of Gillett Road, Spencerport.


Christopher D. Chase received a bachelor of science degree in interdisiplinary engineering and management in commencement ceremonies May 11 at Clarkson University.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Chase, Greenridge Crescent, Hamlin.

Two local graduates now attending SUNY Oswego were honored for both their athletic and academic achievements this May. Junior Dan Vacco (Greece-Olympia, 2000) and sophomore Dave Johnson (Churchville-Chili, 2001) were named to the Verizon Academic All-District baseball team. The District One Team encompasses New York and New England.

To be eligible, players must have a 3.20 grade point average based on a 4.0 scale and be a starter or key contributor to their respective teams. Oswego State was one of two schools to place two players on the team.

Vacco started in all 24 games for the Lakers this season at second base. He scored 17 runs with 11 runs batted in. He is second on the team, defensively with 56 assists and has a fielding percentage of .949. He is majoring in physics and carries a 3.92 GPA. He also started in all 24 games and is a catcher for the team. His .333 batting average is second highest. He is also tied for second on the team with 18 RBI's and scored 20 runs.

Vacco is majoring in chemistry and carries a 3.67 GPA. The two Laker student-athletes will now move on to the national ballot with a chance of becoming Verizon Academic All-America.
