Boy Scout Troop 292
holds Eagle Court of Honor
Boy Scout Troop 292 held a Court of Honor on May 15, to recognize Jeffrey M. Champlin for earning the rank of Eagle. Gary Wumkes, scoutmaster, was master of ceremonies. Steve McKeown and John Norsen, assistant scoutmasters, participated in the ceremony, along with several scouts including John Lawniczak, Greg Selke, Ken Piasecki, Mike Deal, Kelan Kline and Colin Nobles. Eagle Scouts Jim Corke and Brian Mooney escorted Jeff's parents on stage to pin on Jeff's Eagle Badge and present his Certificate. Brian Burgeson, Lake Plains Waterfowl Association, spoke about Jeff's project. Nancy Austin, Chili Lions Club, and Sue Mellor, BSA Northern Lights District Representative, made additional presentations. Plaques from both the Town of Chili and Ogden were also presented.
To earn the rank of Eagle, a scout must earn 21 merit badges and complete an approved community service project. Jeff planned and led the construction and installation of fourteen wood duck nesting boxes in Rose Marsh, near Lake Ontario in February 2003. The project involved over 200 man-hours.
Jeff, age 16, is the son of Barb and Mark Champlin and has one younger sister, Amber. Jeff is a sophomore and honor roll student at Churchville-Chili Senior High School, who enjoys science and computers. He attends St. Christopher's Church where he is an altar server. Jeff began scouting in 1992 as a tiger cub in Pack 292 and crossed over to Troop 292 in 1997. The Eagle Scout Board of Review accepted Jeff on April 10, 2003. After graduation, Jeff wants to attend college and study computer science.
The ceremony included awarding Scout Rank to Andrew Burns, Denis Dobles, Brandon Enright, David Fink, Bryan Fox, Jared LePore, John Maffett, Ryan McConnell, Joey Meleca, Timothy Randall, Nicholas Scipioni, Ian Shelanskey, Dave Viggiani, Stephen Williamson and Nicholas Zeghdani. First Class Rank was awarded to Patrick Chamberlain, Kellen Magiera and Josh Mason. Jeff Jacques earned his Star Rank. Life Rank was awarded to Michael Deal. Eagle Scout Jim Corke was awarded his Gold Palm.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Gary Wumkes was congratulated and honored for his five years of service as Scoutmaster. Gary Lawniczak will be succeeding him as scoutmaster for Troop 292.
