Safety Fair draws crowd
On Saturday, May 31, Holley Karate in conjunction with the Holley Police and Fire Departments presented the 1st annual Safety & Prevention Kids Fair. Despite poor weather, close to 200 children turned out for the event. Each child attending received a free Kids Fair t-shirt in addition to a variety of handouts from the participating organizations.
A variety of booths were set up around the fair covering a wide range of Safety & Prevention elements. Holley's Chief of Police, Kim Hinkley, and Officer Dave Sevor were on hand promoting the D.A.R.E. program and public safety. The Orleans County Sheriff's Department contributed with information for highway safety and road hazard equipment. An electronic safety vehicle driven by McGruff the crime dog also entertained the kids as he interacted with them. Another valuable service provided was child safety seat inspection.
Fire Chief Richard Carry and the Holley Fire Department provided a variety of Fire Prevention information. There was fire truck and ambulance on location for the kids to check out. The fire department was able to let the kids experience a real life simulation of a fire in the "Smoke House." As the children go in, a fireperson fills the house with fake smoke and the kids are able to use the Fire Prevention techniques they learned to escape safely.
Laidlaw Educational Service provided a Talking School Bus that entertained the kids. Each child received a packet of School Bus Safety information and prizes.
There were a variety of demonstrations performed throughout the fair. Sempai Larry Quaranto, owner of Holley Karate conducted a Stranger Danger seminar to a large group of kids and adults. Sempai Larry and his students also demonstrated a wide range of Karate skills practiced at Holley Karate.
The Holley Fire Department had all the kids stopping, dropping and rolling in a fire prevention session. The kids received an in-depth look at the fire prevention suits used by the firefighters as well as tips on what to do in the event of a fire.
The police department put on a K-9 demonstration. The officer/trainer and dog showed how they gain control over a suspect criminal, in addition to sniffing out concealed illegal drugs.
Parkitechs Inc. arranged for professional skate boarder John Binns to be present. He demonstrated the importance of protective gear while skate boarding.
Holley's Mayor Dan Schiavone drew the names for the numerous door prizes that were made available by local merchants. The prizes ranged from water bottles, to cooking grills, to bike helmets as well as bicycles. When the dust settled, there were twelve participants who were especially excited having won one of the twelve bicycles that were given away.
