Summer vacation and reading can be fun
Encouraging students to pick up a book and read during their vacation is the goal of teachers in Brockport. The faculty at the Brockport High School have put together a new summer reading program.
Kathy Jaccarino, high school librarian, came up with the idea for the summer program as a fun way to get more students involved with reading. Teachers from across all areas of the curriculum selected books for the reading list. Students who read from the list will have a chance to talk about the books with the teachers who selected them during after-school book discussion groups to be scheduled in September.
"The benefits of reading are endless," said Jaccarino. "Sometimes we get so caught up in our busy schedules that we forget how enjoyable it is to curl up with a good book. Through this program students will not only be keeping up their reading skills, but we hope that through the discussions they can meet new people, have a chance to connect with faculty members outside the classroom environment, and most importantly -- have fun."
Jaccarino hopes that the variety of books on the list will appeal to a wide range of students. The list includes both fiction and non-fiction titles of various reading levels. Included are: Acorn People, by Ron Jones; The Cure, by Sonia Levitin; Cold Zero: Inside the FBI Hostage Rescue Team, by Christopher Whitcomb; Seabiscuit, by Laura Hillenbrand; Shakespeare Bats Cleanup, by Ron Koertge.
