Spencerport
Canal Days
Canoe Race
Ten teams entered the July 27 Spencerport Canal Days Canoe Race. Despite high winds and storm threatening skies, paddlers raced against the clock, the top three teams running a second heat. First place was taken by the St. John's School team: Jeff Swanson, Bob Broderick and Fred Knauf shown at right. They also won Most Colorful. The Suburban News team: Bill Stultz, Donna Stultz, Karen Fien and Don Griffin shown below, took second place, also winning the Most Elegant Entry prize. Using the Westside News Inc. 50th Anniversary theme of 'How Sweet It Is,' their canoe was decorated with an anniversary cake and gold accents and paddlers wore black t-shirts designed to look like tuxedo shirts. The third place canoe did not finish. Westside News Inc. thanks Esther Fiege for her help with the decorations.
