Meningitis vaccine clinic
scheduled for college-bound students
The Monroe County Health Department has scheduled a meningococcal vaccination clinic for: Monday, August 4, from 3 to 7 p.m., at the Health Department Immunization Clinic, 111 Westfall Road, Rochester.
The vaccine provides protection against several strains of meningococcal bacteria. First year college students, especially those who live in dormitories, are at higher risk of contracting the illness.
Meningococcal bacteria can cause meningitis, an infection of the lining that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. These bacteria can also cause an infection of the blood. The organisms are spread through the exchange of respiratory and throat secretions. Symptoms include fever, headache, rash, stiff neck and vomiting. The disease is fatal in five to 15 percent of cases. Early diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics are important. The vaccine does not offer protection against viral meningitis.
The cost of the vaccine is $80. Cash, check, Visa and MasterCard are accepted forms of payment. The shot is covered for persons with Medicaid, Child Health Plus and Family Health Plus.
