SUNY Brockport honors distinguished alumni and friends
The Brockport Alumni Association 2003 Awards Ceremony was held July 11 in the Tower Fine Arts Theatre on the campus of the State University of New York College at Brockport. The ceremony recognized distinguished alumni and friends with awards in four areas: Hall of Heritage, Honors for Outstanding Service, Citations of Appreciation and the Recent Alumnus Award.
The Hall of Heritage, the Association's most prestigious award, honors those who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to the Alumni Association, the college or their community. This year's recipients were Harvey A. Dorfman '57/61, Brevard, North Carolina, sports psychology instructor/author; Christa Freel Filipowicz '77/'03, Hilton, marketing director, Brockport Auxiliary Services Corporation; Glenn S. Goldberg '80, Chappaqua, NY, senior vice president for Corporate Affairs and assistant to the chairman and chief executive officer of The McGraw-Hill Companies; Jay T. Kearney '66, Colorado Springs, Colorado, vice president for Clinical Affairs, HealtheTech; and Eugene H. Spafford '79, W. Lafayette, Indiana, professor for computer sciences, Purdue University.
The Honors for Outstanding Service award honors those who have given outstanding service to the Alumni Association/the college and/or given outstanding community service and/or shown outstanding professional achievement. This year's recipients were James C. Fallon '69/'71/'74, Brockport, superintendent of the Brockport Central School District; James J. Horn, Brockport, SUNY Brockport associate professor emeritus and president of Educational Travel Service, Inc.; and Esther Denaro Maltese '75/'76, Greece, NY graduate program administrator in the Department of School Partnership at St. John Fisher College.
The Citation of Appreciation Award honors individuals who have demonstrated sustained commitment through their services to and/or affiliation with the Alumni Association. This year's recipients were John A. DeFelice '53, Belmont, California, realtor, who is an active member of the Class of '53 reunions and newsletters; Mary "Chick" Vanni Goldfein '53, Las Vegas, Nevada, who developed and maintains a Class of '53 Web page; and Erma Ornce Pettis '53, owner of Pettis Pools, who produced a brochure for the Class of '53 featuring this year's summer reunion and the Class of '53 Scholarship.
The Recent Alumnus Award honors recent graduates who have developed a positive relationship with the Alumni Association/the college and/or given outstanding community service and/or shown outstanding professional achievement. This year's recipient was Melanie L. Sarkis '95/'97, attorney at Trevett, Lenweaver and Salzer, PC, in Rochester.
