Olympic athletics challenge
Churchville-Chili Intermediate students
How will 30 sixth grade Churchville-Chili Intermediate students spend part of their summer? Learning, playing and competing with three Olympic athletes: Manicka Chromkova, United States, handball player; Radu Milevski, Romanian National Team, badminton player; and Sean O'Neill, United States, table tennis. These Olympic athletes will be visiting a fitness camp at C-C Intermediate School from August 11-15 from 9 a.m. to noon. Each day a different athlete will attend the camp.
The Olympic athletes and students will learn and compete in a variety of sports, such as kayaking, team handball, table tennis, badminton and disc golf and speed stacks.
As part of this camp, students will also try out new fitness equipment installed this summer at the Intermediate School. Not only will students have a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn from an Olympic athlete, but also be the first to try out new fitness equipment, a fitness computer lab and a climbing wall. Last summer, a $350,000 federally funded physical education grant was awarded to the Intermediate School thanks to the hard work of PE teachers Karen Benedict, Dave Childs, Joe Eschberger and Sharon Youngman. Principal John Bellini assisted in the development of the grant project.
During this summer camp, students will have the opportunity to climb a rock wall, ride interactive computerized bikes with video screens and design and monitor a health plan in the new fitness computer lab. New sports equipment, mountain bikes, cross country skis, snow shoes, kayaks, elliptical machines, roller blades, rowing machines, treadmills and steppers will be used by staff and students to give them the opportunity to learn the equipment before school begins. A new sound system for the gym was installed this summer and also will be utilized during the camp.
A grand opening of this new fitness center will be held on Thursday, September 18 from 6 to 8 p.m.
