Orleans Probation provides juvenile adjustment services
Orleans County Probation continues to provide services for Persons In Need of Supervision (PINS) through its recently reorganized Juvenile Adjustment Services Committee (JASC). This committee is a collaboration of the departments of Orleans County Social Services, Mental Health Probation and Genesee-Orleans Youth Bureau. JASC was formed earlier this year after Orleans County was forced to modify its existing Youth Diversion Program due to serious budget shortfalls at the State level.
The JASC program is a proactive response to juveniles who are regularly truant or are continually disobedient and beyond the control of their parent. JASC has assisted with numerous behavioral problems, including: running away, alcohol/drug use, disobedience, poor school attendance and disrespectful attitudes.
A parent, school district, or police department can file a PINS referral on a juvenile under the age of 18. Each referral will be reviewed with the parent and child to determine suitability for the JASC program. If appropriate, a contracted agency will thoroughly assess the family and individual needs and make recommendations. Programs such as prison tours, youth court, victim awareness program, community service, mediation, or ropes course may be incorporated into the case plan. The family would then receive assistance with the implementation of the recommendations and the monitoring of progress.
Anyone interested in filing a PINS referral may do so in person at the Orleans County Probation Department located at 13925 Route 31 - Public Safety Building - Albion. For information or questions contact Orleans Probation at 590-4100.
