All Holley elementary students
to receive free breakfast in 2003-04
Every Holley Central School District elementary student will receive free breakfasts during the 2003-04 school year. Holley is one of only 19 schools in upstate New York to be awarded Academics & Breakfast Connection (ABC) Pilot funding by The Nutrition Consortium of New York State to establish a universal classroom breakfast program during the 2003-04 school year. Holley Elementary School received $10,000, the maximum amount of funding.
The Consortium selected a diverse group of schools in 13 upstate counties with varying demographic and geographic characteristics, including rural and suburban schools in both low-income and high-income areas.
Parents do not need to apply to have their children participate in the free breakfast program. Breakfast will be available to all elementary students on carts throughout the school. Students will pick-up their breakfast items when they enter school in the morning and bring them back to their classrooms to eat.
The ABC Pilot's goal is to increase participation in school breakfast programs, thus improving academic performance and reducing childhood hunger, according to Holley school district representatives.
