Schools in Spencerport ready for opening day
Area residents driving past the construction sites on the Spencerport school property have one question? Will it be finished by the time school opens?
"We will definitely be ready!" states Superintendent Dr. Phillip Langton. "We are coming down to the wire as Labor Day approaches, but construction crews are working feverishly to meet their deadlines. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, all major construction will be completed, so that all of our schools can open in September."
Langton says that there are cosmetic items, such as the planting of shrubs and grass as well as the installation of parking lot lights at the high school, that will be completed during the month of September. The canopy of the new entrance for the high school will also be finished after school opens.
"The vast majority of work has been completed," he says. The new high school auditorium and the renovated high school cafeteria will be ready for the first day of school. The furniture is being moved into the new Canal View Elementary School. The middle school classroom wing, administrative offices and locker rooms will also be finished.
"The middle school library expansion," Langton says, "will be structurally complete when school opens, but the books, shelving and furniture will not all be in place on the first day. We may keep the middle school library closed for a couple of weeks to make sure the new collection is shelved and catalogued properly."
Munn, Taylor and Bernabi Elementary Schools have new heating systems and asbestos has been removed. The entrance road at Bernabi has been resurfaced and a new east-west road, Ranger Road, connecting Bernabi with Canal View, the middle school and the high school, is fully functional. This road also gives community access to the soccer stadium and the practice soccer and softball fields.
The new tennis courts are finished and bleachers are being put up on the new football field/track complex. The new football field will not be used this fall, however, so that the grass can become well established.
