Brockport to host 12-hour vigil
to commemorate September 11
Those brave men and women who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 will be remembered with a Patriot Day vigil in the Village of Brockport. The vigil will take place on Thursday, September 11 from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Firefighter's Memorial Monument located at Station #4 in Brockport.
Fire Department Chaplains Tom Stroup and Mark Mutton will lead the services at the monument.
Uniformed firefighters will arrive at the monument at 8 a.m. and an opening ceremony, with a brief prayer, will begin the vigil. Members of the honor guard will take their posts at the monument at 8:15 a.m. and the honor guard vigil commences. Fire department chaplains will offer a brief prayer service at 11:45 a.m. and members of the Brockport High School band will play "The Star Spangled Banner."
At 4 p.m. another prayer service will be offered. Closing ceremonies with reflections by the fire department chaplains will begin 7:45 p.m. and Firefighter James Sutton will play "Taps" at 8 p.m. when the vigil ends.
Public Information Officer Christopher Martin said uniformed personnel from other agencies and members of the community are encouraged to stop by, ask questions, offer prayers or simply pay their respects in their own special way. "Members of the fire department will be on hand to answer any questions people may have about our monument," he said.
