Airman Zachary Joseph Viterna of Hilton, the son of Joseph Viterna Jr., and Ann Marie (Covel) Viterna, received the Air Force Achievement Medal for Outstanding Achievement during September 8 to December 15, 2002 while serving in the Persian Gulf. The average was made last April. Airman Viterna distinguished himself as a Vehicle Search Team Member, 384th Expeditionary Security Force Squadron, deployed to a classified location in the United States Central Command's area of responsibility. During this period in support of operation Enduring Freedom, Airman Viterna's effort led to the error free receipt, search, and escort of more than 6,000 vehicles, providing mission essential support for military operations. Noting the lack of protection at the overwatch position, he coordinated self-help efforts and assisted in the design of a new overwatch position, improving visibility and protection for the overwatch sentry. Additionally, during two military working dog explosive alerts, Airman Viterna rapidly deployed outside the installation perimeter and redirected traffic away from the area, ensuring the safety of military personnel. The Airman's efforts directed the wing's total force mission that safely operated more than 400 sorties, 2,800 flying hours and off load of more than 17.5 million pounds of fuel to over 660 receiver aircraft, according to the Air Force.
During this time overseas, General Tommy R. Franks recognized Airman Viterna and presented him with a General's coin.
Airman Zachary Joseph Viterna has recently finished special training for Urban Warfare. He is presently stationed at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona with the 56th Security Force Squadron.
