Kendall's Gaesser nets three, one away from school mark
Laura Gaesser scored three goals and assisted on another as the two-time defending Class CC champion Kendall Eagles improved to 2-0 this season with a 5-0 shutout over Holley in girl's soccer.
Briana Johnson got the Eagles on the board in the 15th minutes taking Gaesser's pass from the left corner and scoring. Later in the first half, Trisha D'Agostino gathered an errant corner kick and lined a one-hopper past the keeper from 30-yards out for a 2-0 lead at the half.
Gaesser then broke out in the second half with two of her goals just one minute apart. The first was unassisted after she intercepted a ball in the box, drew out the goalkeeper and knocked it into the net. Her second goal came when she took a pass from Megan Baker at the top of the box and put it just under the crossbar giving Kendall a 4-0 lead. Her final tally came in the 79th minute with D'Agostino threading a pass to Johnson whose shot was partially blocked and rolled toward the end line before Gaesser was able to catch up and knock it home.
Kendall goalkeeper Rachel Maxon picked up her second consecutive shutout after an 8-0 victory at Pembroke in the season opener.
Gaesser's three goals gives her 80 in her career at Kendall, just one away from tying the school record set by current SUNY Geneseo women's soccer coach Aimee Canale between 1980-83. "I'm really excited about the record," said Gaesser after the game. "But my goal isn't the record, it's to win using everybody on the team. I want to finish this season with just as many assists as goals. Since I've known Aimee since I was little (through a soccer camp she conducts in Kendall each summer), I think she would be happy for me."
She looks to break the record at home Tuesday, September 9 against Oakfield-Alabama.
