Historical societies, museums open
for Olde Northampton Day
Eight museums and historical societies in this area are sponsoring an "Olde Northampton Heritage Day" on Sunday afternoon, September 28. They are jointly holding open houses, inviting area residents to tour their facilities and view their museum collections. Admission is free.
Northampton was the name of the first town organized in western New York. It included the entire area between the Genesee River and Lake Erie. The six towns participating in the "Olde Northampton Heritage Day" were parts of the Town of Northampton.
A brochure describing the facilities and collections and providing a map and driving directions will be available at the participating institutions by September 21 and during the tours. It will also be available ahead of time at the participating municipal offices.
Bicyclists are invited to join two guided groups that will tour some of the museums. Both will meet at the Capen Hose firehouse at the intersection of South Main Street and Park Avenue in Brockport at noon. Beginning bicyclists will cycle the canal towpath to the Murray-Holley Museum and back. More experienced bicyclists will ride a longer route that will include Brockport, Clarkson, Holley and Clarendon. For further information contact Marilyn Colby, 637-2014 or mcolby@brockport.edu.
