Bees hang on
Byron-Bergen's A. J. Wells scored a first half goal and the Bees defense made it stand up in a 1-0 win in girl's soccer against Holley.
In the 31st minute of the game, Wells capitalized when the Hawks defense couldn't clear a ball in the box to the left of the net and pounded it into the far corner for the lead. This came after Trisha Williams hit the right post in the first minute of play. The Bees put eight shots on net in the first half and clearly outplayed Holley.
The Hawks woke up in the second half led by their midfield stepping into the passing lanes and their forward line beating the Bees to loose balls which created several scoring chances.
In the 50th minute, the Hawks' Courtney Gaylord had a long chance saved by Byron-Bergen goalkeeper Brianna D'Errico and followed that up just thirty seconds later by putting a ball just over the crossbar. In the 59th minute, Holley's Jamie Lutes took a direct kick from keep in the left corner, which Gaylord chipped wide.
The Bees recovered with a couple of scoring chances of their own late in the game. Chelsey Fackleman and Katie Mullen teamed up for one chance in the 69th minute and, one minute later, Rachel Smith sent a 20-yard direct kick over the defenders and off the far post.
Byron-Bergen improved to 2-0 this season with the win while Holley fell to 0-2 and still looking for their first goal of the season.
