Richard Haynes with his pop can top donation

So many pop can tops!
Upon receiving a call from the Twig Gift Shop at Lakeside Memorial Hospital to come and receive a donation of pop can tops, Cora Goyette, Donor Relations Director, located a box and headed down the hallway. What she had not expected was to come face to face with 168,000 tops. The interesting thing about this donation is that Richard Haynes counted all the tops and placed them into marked containers. Never before has Lakeside known the actual number of pop can tabs in any one donation. After searching for a place to donate the ten month collection to, Richard Haynes decided to enlist the aid of WOKR Channel 13 via email. It was at Ginny Ryan's suggestion that they contacted Lakeside.
The Haynes are staying at the Fourwinds Campground in Portageville, NY and will soon be traveling to Florida to escape the New York winter. Along their travels, they collect pop tops from other campers and businesses from as far away as Quebec, Canada. When they delivered their donation, the Haynes also handed Goyette a chip from a contributor in Cuylerville, NY, with the specific instruction that the recipient of the chip make contact directly with them. Doing so would enable The Greenway Pub patrons to see the tops' final destination and use.
The Haynes are also interested in how the community benefits. "We want them (the pop tops) to go for something that is a worthwhile cause," stated Terry Haynes.
The ongoing "Pop Your Tops for Lakeside" drive encourages people to save their pop and beer can tabs for recycling. Proceeds from their sale are given to Lakeside Twig Association which in turn donates the funds to the hospital for purchase of medical equipment.
