Flu vaccine clinics open October 1
For the first time in three years, all residents of Monroe County have the ability to obtain a flu shot beginning October 1. According to Rachel Gressel, director of the University of Rochester Medical Center's Community Nursing Center's flu clinic program, this winter's version of the vaccine will be available on time and in sufficient quantities to make it possible to offer flu vaccinations to all residents, without consideration to age or health issues. People 50 and over, and those with a greater risk of complications from the flu from such chronic conditions as heart or lung disease, diabetes, or asthma, are encouraged to get the vaccine early. In addition, health care workers, people with weakened immune systems and women who are more than three months pregnant are also at higher risk, and should obtain a flu shot. The Community Nursing Center has more than 20 public clinics scheduled at various locations throughout the next three months including town halls, malls and community centers. Medicare and most HMOs cover the cost of receiving a flu shot; insurance ID cards are necessary for proof of insurance. Otherwise, there is a $20 fee for the vaccine.
