Hilton middle schoolers learn about careers in food service
Merton Williams Middle School students studying Family and Consumer Science were excited to learn about career opportunities in food service from Hilton Schools' Director of Food Service, Nancy Armocida.
"Mrs. Armocida's presentation was a history of career opportunities in the food service industry laced with personal experiences that made for very upbeat and educational learning experience for our students," said teacher Warren Bacon. "By explaining how education unlocks the doors to future employment in her specific field of expertise, she demonstrated hiring practices, careers in nutritional research, and displayed many unique foods and menu preparations."
Students were invited to taste Greek food; sample exotic fruits and vegetables; spices and garnishes; the preparation of salads and side dishes; and interpreting for our students the differences in restaurant preparation and pricing of entrees and beverages. "Her fast-paced and enlightening presentation was both informative and entertaining," Bacon said. "Her insight into healthy eating habits and her personal belief in a lifetime of healthy nutrition was well received by students and faculty alike."
Armocida holds a degree in Nutrition from SUNY Buffalo. In 2002 Mrs. Armocida received a $5,000 grant from the N.Y.S. Office of General Services for her creative use of food preparation in the Hilton District.
