established in Apple Derby The 25th Anniversary Apple Derby Run held October 4 was certainly a race for the record book as 90 individuals ran the certified course and new competition times were established. Overall Male Champion Ryan Pauling 24:55 broke John Luther's 25:02 long-standing course record which stood since 1984, and Laura Bloedorn 28:53, third overall running in her first race in Rochester since moving from Minnesota, broke Linda Grossman's 29:10 record established in 1998. Both Ryan and Linda received a $250 cash prize as part of the Furnal's Big M Challenge which offers the special financial incentive for those who produce course records during the Derby Run. In the Roger Messenger Masters Champion category, David Young 31:51 and Patricia DiGiorgio 36:11 brought home awards honoring the memory of Roger who was a successful and well respected local runner. The category was added to the anniversary run by Race Coordinator Tom Ganley and truly produced a special moment, as Roger's twin daughters Ann, 31:39, 6th overall, and April, 31:47, 7th overall, placed tops within their 19 to 29 age division. Second place Jason Knarr 28:47, fourth place Matt Kellman 31:33, and Jeff Ouriel 31:37 round out the top five finishers. A dozen volunteers helped with the race as did the Monroe County Sheriff's Department and Parma Special Police who assured course safety. A special contributor was Jim Merkel, according to Steve Fowler of Hilton Parma Recreation.
