Wells two goals spark bees
Senior A.J. Wells netted a pair of goals to lead Byron-Bergen to a 3-0 victory at Holley in high school girl's soccer under clear, but cold conditions last week.
Wells scored her first goal of the game in the 10th minute when Alyson Capone crossed a pass from the left corner. The Holley goalkeeper played the ball aggressively, but came up empty allowing Wells to dribble around her and score for a 1-0 lead. She would make it 2-0 when she pounced on a loose ball just above the box, dribbled and hit the top right corner of the net in the 26th minute.
The Bees scored their final goal in the second half when Rachel Smith found Mandy Krol on a corner kick. Krol headed it in for a 3-1 lead.
Holley had three great scoring chances, but could not capitalize. In the first half, Courtney Gaylord grazed the crossbar off a direct kick. In the second half, Ashley Colby fed a hustling Dominique Rupert whose shot was right on net, but right into the hands of the keeper. Then, in the 54th minute, Colby stole the ball and shot low to the left of the net where Bees goalkeeper Brianna D'Errico dove and tipped it wide of the post to preserve her seventh shutout of the season.
Byron-Bergen improved to 9-3-1 with the win while Holley fell to 8-6. Each team will wrap up their regular season in the coming week.
