Bats and birds move
into new homes in Parma
Throughout the years, the Parma Town Park on Route 259 has benefited from Scout service projects, and thanks to Richie and Ted Alexander's Eagle projects completed this summer, bats and birds will be enjoying new homes. Under the direction of Parma Supervisor Rick Lemcke, the Alexander brothers took on ambitious projects which would assist the park's natural habitat and make the park more comfortable for park patrons.
Richie's project was to build six very large bat hotels and strategically place them throughout the park. A total of 27 volunteers and 170 hours contributed to these bat houses. The coordination of labor and the material donation from Matthews and Fields were secured by Richie Alexander.
Ted's project was the building of four Purple Martin houses to promote the habitat of this beautiful migratory bird. Ted also arranged for donated material and coordinated the efforts of 20 individuals and 150 volunteer hours.
Both projects will serve with reducing the mosquito population at Parma Town Park and compliment habitat recently destroyed with the Town Park Expansion Project.
Richie, a tenth grader, and Ted, a ninth grader, are students at Hilton High School and members of Troop 125 of the St. Leo Church Knights of Columbus. They both received their Eagle Awards at a Court of Honor ceremony on October 11.
