Brighton ends Rangers' season
Brighton scored two first half goals and made them stand up as the 12th seeded Barons upset #5 Spencerport 2-1 in first round action of the Section Five girl's soccer playoffs.
The Rangers dominated play for much of the first half with numerous scoring chances, but could not find the net. Brighton did capitalize on their few opportunities scoring off a breakaway in the 14th minute and then again on penalty kick after one of the Barons was taken down in the box in the 31st minute.
Spencerport put on the offensive pressure again for most of the second half before finally scoring with just over six minutes left in regulation. Perfect touch passes from Sam Hawn and Jessie Bartock found Laura Willit open and she drilled it in to close the gap to one goal.
More pressure over the remainder of the game yielded no reward, as Brighton was able to kill the final minutes and preserve the upset.
"This was just a game of plenty of missed opportunities to put the ball in the net," said Rangers head coach Jamie Schneider. "We played a good game - the only thing missing was the scoring." Spencerport finishes the season 10-6-1.
The Rangers Alicia Beach, Jessica Bartock, Sally Cappetta, Katie Clark, Missy D'Agostino, Samantha Rhow, Elaina Plucknette, Lauren Moscicki, Shelly Borzilleri, Julie Hinman, Kim Pulhamus, Diana Hemm, Christina DiSano and Cassie Moyer all suited up for their final soccer game in a Rangers uniform.
