Trimmer Road Erie Canal bridge
closes for winter November 6
The New York State Department of Transportation is undertaking a project to improve the condition of the Trimmer Road Bridge over the Erie Canal in the town of Ogden, Monroe County. It will be necessary to close the bridge to all traffic on or about November 6.
The bridge is slated to reopen in April 2004. A detour will not be posted, however the Washington Street Bridge in Adams Basin will be reopened in early November for the winter.
Trimmer Road was originally scheduled to be under construction earlier this summer but with the closure of the Washington Street Bridge, the obvious choice for an alternate route, work on Trimmer Road was postponed until fall when the canal boating season ends.
By not closing Trimmer Road at the same time as the Washington Street bridge is closed, NYSDOT representatives say they are able to minimize the impact of the work on the neighbors in the community. "We make every effort we can to minimize inconvenience, time and money on the traveling public when we can - even if it means rescheduling a project to another part of the year," said Regional Director Charles Moynihan.
The Canal Trailway will be closed at various times throughout the project.
Specific work to the bridge includes removing and replacing all concrete features of the bridge, including pier sub-structures, end approach spans, and the main steel truss. Similar work was done last winter to the Gallup Road Bridge as part of an initiative to improve Canal bridges.
The contract was awarded to Crane-Hogan Structural Systems of Spencerport, according to the DOT.
